3 key ways to gain the most benefit from a short workout

Are you ever at the gym and see someone sitting on a machine scrolling on their phone while waiting to start the next set of exercises? Although a common scene in those under 30, I believe we are all guilty of it from time to time.

These moments between sets of exercises are actually a huge opportunity to make big improvements in your fitness. Working everyday in a gym, I see the distractions that keep people from maximizing their time. Lets discover a few ways you can get the most out of short workouts and minimize the distractions.

  1. Don’t rest during the rest periods: Example- Today’s leg workout has you lifting heavy weights, so you need to rest your legs for a minute or two between sets. Use this time to work on your core, balance or upper body bodyweight exercises. Do a 60 sec plank, pushups, stand on one leg for 30 sec each leg, etc…

  2. Save the conversation for after the workout: I say this carefully, because for some people catching up with gym friends is a huge part of their enjoyment at the gym. It’s great to make friends and share the common goal of getting healthier. However, if you are working toward a goal, keep that a priority - especially during a workout. Your friends in the gym will understand and admire your commitment.

  3. Phones only for music!: Here’s where the scrolling becomes a time waster. Scrolling can be addictive and time FLIES when you are doing it. Maximize your workout with active rest exercises like those I listed in point #1. Choose music, podcast or whatever you enjoy and just zone in. Resist the urge to pick up your phone- you won’t gain much fitness lifting that :).

    Next time you need to fit in a workout in your busy schedule, remember why you are there, what your goals are, and stay focused to maximize your results!
